The "Gunk" Problem: Keeping Your P-Trap Clean

October 21, 2025

If you’ve ever noticed a mysterious smell coming from your sink—or water that drains slower than usual—the culprit might be lurking right under your countertop: the P-trap. This curved section of pipe holds a small amount of water that blocks sewer gases from entering your kitchen, but over time, it also collects grease, soap scum, and food particles. The result? The dreaded “gunk problem.”

Cleaning your P-trap is easier than it sounds. Start by placing a bucket under the trap to catch any water. Loosen the slip nuts on both ends and remove the curved section carefully. You’ll likely find buildup coating the inside. Use a bottle brush or paper towel to clean it thoroughly before reattaching. Rinse with hot water to flush out any remaining residue.

For prevention, avoid pouring grease or oil down the drain, and run hot water for a minute after using your sink. Baking soda and vinegar can also help dissolve minor buildup before it becomes a clog.

If your P-trap leaks or keeps clogging, it may be time for a replacement or a professional cleaning. Over time, the threads and seals wear out, making leaks inevitable.

At I Hate My Sink, we don’t just fix the big problems—we handle the gunky ones too. A clean P-trap means a cleaner, fresher, and more efficient sink. Don’t ignore the small signs—take care of the gunk before it takes over.
