Solving Common Garbage Disposal Problems

September 29, 2025

Garbage disposals are a modern kitchen convenience—until they stop working properly. A jammed or noisy unit can turn meal cleanup into a stressful chore, and ignoring the problem only makes it worse. The good news is that many garbage disposal issues have simple solutions. By learning the basics of troubleshooting, you can keep your disposal running smoothly and avoid unnecessary repairs.

One of the most common problems is a jammed disposal. You’ll know it’s jammed if the motor hums but the blades don’t spin. This often happens when fibrous foods, bones, or foreign objects get lodged inside. To fix it, first turn off the power to the unit. Then, use an Allen wrench in the reset slot at the bottom of the disposal to manually free the blades. Never reach inside the disposal with your hands—it’s dangerous and unnecessary.

Another frequent issue is a disposal that won’t turn on. This can usually be traced to a tripped circuit or the reset button on the unit itself. Check your breaker box, then press the red reset button at the bottom of the disposal. If it still doesn’t start, the internal wiring or motor may be worn out, and replacement could be the best option.

Strange noises are also a telltale sign of trouble. Metallic clanks or grinding often mean that silverware, bottle caps, or other objects have fallen inside. Turn off the disposal immediately and use tongs or pliers to remove the object. Rattling sounds without objects present may indicate loose blades or failing internal parts, which usually requires professional repair or replacement.

Finally, there’s the issue of foul odors. Even if your disposal is working fine, trapped food particles can lead to persistent smells. Cleaning the disposal with a mix of baking soda and vinegar, followed by a rinse of boiling water, can refresh it. For extra odor control, grinding citrus peels or ice cubes with salt helps clean the blades and chamber.

At I Hate My Sink, we know that a well-functioning garbage disposal is essential to keeping your kitchen efficient and stress-free. While many problems can be solved with a quick fix, persistent issues may signal that it’s time for a replacement. Whether you need repair tips or a full upgrade, we’ll help you keep your sink and disposal working in harmony.
