Rust on My Stainless Steel Sink? What to Do.

November 5, 2025

Stainless steel sinks are known for durability and shine—but even they can show rust spots over time. Don’t panic—those orange stains don’t mean your sink is ruined.

Most rust spots come from metal particles—like cast iron pans or steel wool—that leave residues which oxidize on the surface. The sink itself isn’t rusting; it’s just reacting to contaminants.

To remove rust, sprinkle baking soda on the area and scrub gently with a soft sponge and vinegar. For tougher stains, use a non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner. Always follow the grain of the metal to avoid scratches.

Prevent rust by drying your sink after each use and avoiding prolonged contact with metal or harsh chemicals.

At I Hate My Sink, we help homeowners restore their sinks’ original brilliance—and teach them how to keep it that way. Because even “stainless” steel deserves a little TLC.
