How to Fix a Squeaky Faucet Handle

October 28, 2025

Few things are more irritating than a faucet handle that squeaks every time you use it. The sound might seem minor, but it’s a sign that something inside your faucet isn’t working as smoothly as it should. The good news? You don’t need to call a plumber for this one. Here’s how to silence that squeak for good.

Most squeaks come from friction between metal components inside the handle. Over time, mineral buildup, worn parts, or dried-out lubrication can cause the handle to grind slightly when you turn it. Start by turning off your water supply and gently removing the faucet handle using an Allen wrench or screwdriver.

Once you’ve removed it, check for signs of corrosion or debris around the cartridge stem. If it’s dirty, clean the area with vinegar and a soft brush. Then, apply a small amount of plumber’s grease or silicone-based lubricant to the moving parts. Avoid using petroleum jelly—it can damage rubber seals.

If the squeak persists, your cartridge or O-rings might be worn out and need replacing. These inexpensive parts can usually be found at your local hardware store and installed with basic tools.

At I Hate My Sink, we know small annoyances can make a big difference in your daily routine. Fixing a squeaky faucet isn’t just about silence—it’s about making your kitchen feel brand new again.
