Curing "Countertop Cancer": Removing Mold and Mildew Around Your Sink

October 29, 2025

If you’ve noticed dark spots, bubbling, or soft edges near your sink, you might be dealing with what pros call “countertop cancer.” It’s a common problem caused by water seeping between your sink and countertop, leading to mold, mildew, and rot beneath the surface. Left untreated, it can destroy your counters and cabinets.

The first step is identifying the problem early. Signs include discoloration around the caulk line, musty odors, or soft, swollen countertop edges. Once water penetrates the seal, it creates a moist environment perfect for mold growth.

To fix it, start by removing all old caulk with a utility knife and thoroughly drying the area. Clean the surface with a mix of bleach and water or a commercial mold remover. Once dry, reseal using a high-quality waterproof silicone that’s mold-resistant.

If the damage extends beneath the counter or into the cabinet, you may need to replace sections of laminate or wood to prevent further decay. In extreme cases, replacing the entire sink setup may be more cost-effective than repeated repairs.

At I Hate My Sink, we’ve helped homeowners eliminate “countertop cancer” for good with proper sink sealing and waterproof installation. A tight seal isn’t just aesthetic—it’s your best defense against hidden water damage.
