Beyond the Kitchen: Creative Uses for an Old Sink
When upgrading your kitchen, you’re often left with a perfectly functional, if slightly outdated, old sink. Before you send that heavy porcelain, stainless steel, or cast-iron basin to the landfill, consider repurposing it. Old sinks are built to be sturdy and hold water, making them ideal for creative second lives both indoors and out.
Here are three popular and practical ways to reuse an old sink.
1. The Ultimate Utility Tub
An old double-bowl sink, especially a stainless steel one, makes an excellent utility basin for a garage, basement, or laundry room.
- Function: It's perfect for soaking grimy tools, washing paintbrushes, or scrubbing muddy shoes without bringing the mess into the house.
- Installation: Simply mount it onto a set of basic wooden or galvanized pipe legs, or recess it into a simple workbench structure. Connect the drain to a floor drain or use it with a bucket underneath.
2. Garden Planter or Potting Bench Insert
This is an attractive way to incorporate heavy porcelain or even a classic farmhouse sink into your landscaping.
- Function: Sinks naturally hold soil and offer excellent drainage (through the drain hole!). A repurposed sink makes a wonderful herb garden, succulent planter, or container for annual flowers.
- Installation: Simply set the sink on a brick base or wooden stand. Use the drain hole for water run-off, covering it with a piece of screen to keep the soil in place. A sink set into a workbench provides a perfect contained area for repotting plants without making a massive mess.
3. Party Cooler or Bar Station
For outdoor parties or cookouts, an old sink is the perfect centerpiece for keeping drinks cold.
- Function: Fill the basin with ice and drinks. The sturdy material and built-in drain make it ideal for quick cleanups once the ice melts.
- Installation: Place the sink on a patio table or build a custom frame for it. You can even run a simple hose connection to the drain hole to whisk melted water away from your entertaining area.
